Forane History

St.Michaels Forane

History

In 1589, history records the installation of a cross in Kattoor, located on the southern side of the Arthunkal Santhanthire Mission center. In 1600, a chapel was established in Kattoor in the name of Saint Michael. During his tenure as the vicar of Arthunkal Church, Fr. Fenicio stayed in Kattoor for some time (until 1602) and carried out missionary work. In 1619, the chapel was rebuilt with stone walls and a thatched roof. In 1760, a new church was constructed at the site where the Kattoor Church cemetery now stands.

The church currently seen in Kattoor was built in 1830, and the beautiful altar was completed in 1890. The church façade, which was damaged due to an electric shock, was reconstructed to its present form during the tenure of Rev. Fr. Louis Gonsalves.

The Kattoor St. Michael’s Church can be summarized as a structure built on the foundation of a community’s unwavering faith. For 425 years, Saint Michael has resided in his temple in Kattoor, bestowing endless blessings and prosperity upon those who seek him. To express gratitude for the countless graces received over this time, a year-long celebration will be held, starting in November 2024 and concluding in December 2025. Everyone is invited to enrich these festivities with their presence and contributions. All are welcome to the sacred grounds of Saint Michael.

At our church, we believe in the power of faith and community. With each moment, we are uplifted by the grace of God and the joy of fellowship
