The history of St. Michael’s Church in Kattoor is a heartwarming journey of faith and community that stretches back over 425 years. It all started in 1589 when a cross was placed in Kattoor, marking the first step toward the church’s deep roots in the village. Just a few years later, in 1600, a small chapel was built in honor of Saint Michael, and this humble space became the center of prayer and worship for the growing Christian community. During this time, Fr. Fenicio, the vicar of Arthunkal Church, spent a few years in Kattoor, helping to spread the Christian faith and nurture the spiritual life of the people until 1602.
As the community’s faith flourished, so did their church. In 1619, the chapel was rebuilt with stone walls and a thatched roof, giving the people a stronger, more lasting place to gather and pray. Then, in 1760, a new church was constructed on the land where the Kattoor Church cemetery now stands, marking another important milestone in the church’s history. The growing devotion of the community to Saint Michael was clear, and their love for their faith was evident in every step of the church’s development.
The church we see today was built in 1830, standing as a proud symbol of the people’s enduring faith and love for Saint Michael. In 1890, the altar was completed, adding even more beauty and sanctity to the church, making it a truly special place. Like any building that stands for so many years, the church faced challenges along the way—one such moment was when the church façade was damaged by an electric shock. However, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Louis Gonsalves, the church was lovingly restored to its current form, ensuring it continued to stand strong as a place of worship and community.
For over 425 years, Saint Michael has been a constant presence in the lives of the people of Kattoor. His protection, guidance, and blessings have been a source of strength through the years, and the church remains a place where generations have come to pray, reflect, and find peace. To celebrate this rich history, a special year-long celebration will begin in November 2024 and run through December 2025. It’s a time for the entire community to come together, give thanks for the blessings they’ve received, and honor the lasting legacy of Saint Michael in their lives.
St. Michael’s Church isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to the faith, resilience, and love of the people who have called it home for centuries. It’s a place where stories of grace and hope are shared, where the community gathers to celebrate and support one another, and where Saint Michael’s spirit continues to shine bright for all who enter. Everyone is invited to be a part of this special celebration and contribute to the joyful festivities that will mark this milestone in the church’s history. The doors are always open, and all are welcome to experience the blessings of Saint Michael.
At our church, we believe in the power of faith and community. With each moment, we are uplifted by the grace of God and the joy of fellowship
